Diabetic Patients

For diabetic patients, controlling the level of sugar in their blood is a serious issue, which can lead to other health complications. According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 30 million Americans had diabetes in 2012. Each year, 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with the condition.

Patients with type 1 diabetes need to control the extra glucose in their system by taking insulin. Those with type 2 diabetes may keep their condition in check with:

  • Exercise
  • Meal planning
  • Weight loss

If these efforts are not successful, various medications work to lower blood glucose levels. However, these drugs as well as another antipsychotic medicine may have serious side effects. Here is some critical information that patients undergoing these treatments need to know.

Important Information About Medications for Diabetes and Schizophrenia

Do you need to control diabetes with medication? You will find important information about the following:
  • INVOKANA: This medication was intended to lower A1C in adults with type 2 diabetes but may cause dehydration, yeast infections, kidney problems, urinary tract infections and other serious health complications.
  • INVOKAMET: This SGLT2 inhibitor, designed to decrease the production of glucose in the liver, may result in serious kidney problems, urinary tract infections, abnormal weight loss and hypersensitivity reactions.
  • FARXIGA: This medication, another SGLT2 inhibitor, was intended to lower blood glucose levels among diabetics, but may cause the same problems as INVOKAMET plus difficulty breathing, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, fatigue or sleepiness.
  • XIGDUO XR: This SGLT2 inhibitor has also prompted warnings about the same side effects as INVOKAMET and FARXIGA.
  • JARDIANCE: Sometimes resulting in the same side effects as noted for the previous SGLT2 inhibitors, this medication may result in kidney failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, ketosis or acidosis, heart attack, stroke or wrongful death.
  • GLYXAMBI: This combination of JARDIANCE and TRADJENTA has raised the same concerns as the SGLT2 inhibitors above.
  • SYNJARDY: This combination of EMPAGLIFLOZIN and METFORMIN has a serious risk of lactic acidosis, which can result in death.
  • NVEGA SUSTENNA: This medication may cause serious side effects including an increased risk of death in elderly people who are confused, have memory loss and have lost touch with reality (dementia-related psychosis, a condition that this drug is not approved to treat). Other serious problems may include stroke, irregular heartbeat, uncontrolled facial movements, low blood pressure and more.
